The Risk Of Wireless Networks
"I love wireless networks, they are the source of easy and readily available information, computers and access points." This is the quote of hacker - they are happy. This statement is profound and shows the complete ignorance and total disregard of the security of their clients of cable companies and Internet service providers. When I walk around my own neighborhood and test the wireless networks about 70% are completely open connections without encryption and passwords to login and use. What does that mean? It means that anybody with a laptop and a wireless card can use those networks to log in, browse the internet, send massive amounts of spam e-mail, download what ever they want and in most cases has access to the computers in the house to scan hard drives and steal data. Internet service providers are only interested in selling their service, but not in providing any security as that would mean that their technicians would have to be trained (expensive to train and trained staff costs more) and the setup would go beyond the 5 minutes it takes to just plug in the router and run to the next customer. Consumers are left with a system which can compromise everything they have achieved in their life. I know cases of identity theft where people lost their house they lived in, as it was stolen from them because of unsecured computers. It takes years to reverse the damages of ID theft and in most cases they never go away, as the victim has to prove he/she did not do it. We got a complaint from a person, that his ISP was charging him with additional bandwidth every month, he did not understand why. After an audit we found out that 2 of his neighbors where using his wireless network to download illegal software, music and videos. While the cost of the bandwidth is a problem the real issue here is that this person could be implicated with theft as his IP address was used for illegal activities. After we secured his wireless network the bandwidth usage dropped dramatically and we got a new customer for life. His ISP had in his advertising the big fuzz about security and antispam but they installed his wireless router without any security whatsoever, and they where happy to charge their customer for the stolen bandwidth! How is YOUR WIRELESS NETWORK, do you know if it is secure or not?
